Students urged to pursue careers in agriculture at NAREI Open Day
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha on Wednesday encouraged students attending the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) Open Day 2026 to pursue careers in agriculture, highlighting opportunities in science, technology, research and entrepreneurship.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mustapha said it is important to look beyond traditional farming and recognise the sector’s expanding role in Guyana’s development.
The sector offers career opportunities in agricultural engineering, agronomy, veterinary medicine, research, food processing and agribusiness.
The minister stated that young professionals will be needed to improve farming methods, strengthen crop and livestock production, and modernise agricultural infrastructure.
“Agriculture is a world of opportunity for young people,” the minister said, encouraging students to explore the exhibits, participate in demonstrations and interact with researchers to learn more about the sector.
The minister highlighted the importance of agriculture to national food security and the need to increase local production as Guyana and the wider Caribbean work to reduce food imports.
“At the end of today, try to make agriculture your career, because we need your skills,” the minister urged.
Meanwhile, NAREI’s Chief Executive Officer Jagnarine Singh said more than 500 students were expected to attend the open day, which showcased the institute’s research and agricultural activities.
Several schools visited throughout the day, allowing students to learn about NAREI’s laboratory facilities, greenhouse operations and modern agricultural practices, as well as the work of participating agencies.
