Sen. Mark Kelly Says He Will ‘Seriously Consider’ 2028 Presidential Run

(MENAFN) US Democratic Senator Mark Kelly has indicated that he will "seriously consider" running for president in 2028, as stated by reports. His comments come amid a dispute with the Trump administration over a video in which he encouraged military personnel to refuse illegal orders.

The Arizona senator, who was accused of "seditious behaviour" by Donald Trump over the November clip, said he and his wife, Gabrielle Giffords, received "many" death threats following the president's remarks.

"We get them on a weekly basis now," he told a news agency. "We had to get security to protect us 24 hours a day."

Asked about a potential White House run, Kelly, a retired Navy captain, said he was considering it "because we're in some seriously challenging times."

The 61-year-old former astronaut highlighted his unique background: "I'm one of the very few engineers, I'm the only person with a graduate degree in engineering the United States Senate. I've got combat experience, that's kind of rare. I spent 25 years in the military."

He added, "It's a serious decision. I just haven't made it yet."

Kelly and five other lawmakers, all with military or intelligence experience, were targeted by the government after releasing a 90-second video urging troops to disobey orders they deemed illegal. The video came amid rising questions over the legality of US strikes on alleged narco-trafficking boats off South America.

The Pentagon has attempted to demote Kelly’s military rank, and a grand jury has declined to charge him with seditious conspiracy.
