Mexico Commits to 350,000 Acre-Feet Water Delivery to U.S.
The commitment reinforces adherence to the 1944 Water Treaty, according to a joint statement released by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, who expressed support for the bilateral agreement.
"Under the negotiated outcome, Mexico committed to deliver a minimum of 350,000 acre-feet of water per year to the United States during the current five-year cycle, providing stability for agricultural producers and rural communities in the Lower Rio Grande Valley," the statement confirmed.
The development comes after US President Donald Trump and Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum held discussions last week, with both leaders pledging to address persistent water allocation disputes between the neighboring nations.
Rubio characterized the arrangement as a "win" for American farmers and ranchers, noting that Washington values Sheinbaum's "consistent efforts" to fulfill Mexico's obligations under the decades-old water sharing accord.
To guarantee reliable water transfers, both countries have committed to conducting monthly coordination sessions, the statement revealed.
